At Key Stage 3, Rowan High School provides a broad and balanced curriculum that helps students build a strong foundation for future learning and personal growth. Humanities subjects help students understand the world, while creative and practical subjects encourage problem solving and creativity. Physical Education promotes health and teamwork, and PSHE supports students’ wellbeing and prepares them for life beyond school.

By offering a wide range of subjects, Rowan High School gives every student the chance to discover their strengths, explore new interests, and gain the skills they need for success at Key Stage 4 and in the future.

 Key Stage 4 Curriculum

At Key Stage 4, the curriculum is designed to provide students with a balanced mix of compulsory core subjects and optional pathways that suit their interests, strengths, and future aspirations. This broad offer allows students to build a strong academic foundation while also pursuing areas of personal interest, helping them to develop the knowledge, skills, and qualifications needed for further education, training, or employment. All students are given the opportunity to undertake examinations in their chosen subjects to ensure they achieve recognised qualifications for their future pathways.

Key Stage 5 Curriculum

At Key Stage 5, the curriculum offers a flexible and personalised approach, designed to support students’ individual pathways and prepare them for adulthood. Core subjects are delivered through pathways depending on their needs and aspirations. Some students may have achieved their GCSE in a subject and will therefore embark on the Personal Development pathway, which includes valuable opportunities such as Travel Training, College Visits, and developing wider life skills. Others may need the chance to resit examinations or simply progress to the next level in that subject. The curriculum also places a strong emphasis on employability and independence through Enterprise & Marketing, Careers and Work Experience and Personal Development programmes, with links to Youth Employment UK. The school’s careers curriculum is fully aligned with the Gatsby Benchmarks, ensuring that all students receive high-quality, impartial guidance and a range of meaningful encounters with employers, further education, and training providers. For learners ready to progress further, Level 3 qualifications are accessed through partnerships with local sixth forms and colleges, ensuring each student is supported on an individual basis to achieve their future goals.
